XV Bi-power law correlations for sediment transport in pressure driven channel flows

چکیده
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) can be used to extract information implicit in the equations of fluid-particle motion. We have investigated the lift-off of a single particle and many particles in pressure driven flows by 2D DNS (N.A. Patankar, Huang, Ko & Joseph 2001a, Ko, N.A. Patankar & Joseph 2001, Joseph, & Ocando 2001, Choi & Joseph 2001, N.A. Patankar, Ko, Choi & Joseph 2001b). We show that the lift-off of single particles and many particles in horizontal flows follow laws of similarity, power laws, which may be obtained by plotting simulation data on log-log plots. Power laws emerge as in the case of Richardson-Zaki correlations for fluidization by drag. Power laws also emerge from the experimental data from STIM-LAB (Patankar, Joseph, Wang, Barree, Conway & Asadi 2002 and Wang, Joseph, Patankar, Conway & Barree 2002). These engineering correlations for lift-off can be used to predict proppant placement in hydraulic fracturing.

Numerical Analysis of Sediment Transport in Sewer Pipe
The efficiency and economical performance of sewer systems is an essential issue in urban drainage. The need for sewers to carry sediment has been recognized for many years. One of the main problems in designing sewerage systems is the sediment deposition. Sedimentation in sewers occurs regularly according to the alternating natural flow. The present study investigates the hydraulic characteris...

Suitable stable channel design and optimization of river geometry can reduce cost of projects. The regime theory provides the possibility of empirical and semi-empirical investigations of stable channel design in which erosion and sediment transport are in equilibrium. The objective of this research is an investigation and a comparison of the influence of uniform and non-uniform flows on the pr...
متن کاملSimulation of Micro-Channel and Micro-Orifice Flow Using Lattice Boltzmann Method with Langmuir Slip Model
Because of its kinetic nature and computational advantages, the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has been well accepted as a useful tool to simulate micro-scale flows. The slip boundary model plays a crucial role in the accuracy of solutions for micro-channel flow simulations. The most used slip boundary condition is the Maxwell slip model. The results of Maxwell slip model are affected by the ac...

متن کاملA nonlocal theory of sediment buffering and bedrock channel evolution
[1] Bedrock erosion in mountain river channels ultimately sets the erosion rate of the surrounding hillslopes and the rate of sediment supply to the channels. The supply of coarse bed sediment acts as a dampening effect on further erosion by depositing an alluvial cover that temporarily obscures the bedrock. For landscapes where the residence time of the alluvial bed cover is comparable to the ...
